post-Grakkus

Zeb's finally gone to his bunk to rest, not least because the Ghost is now safely in hyperspace, headed away from Nar Shaddaa and toward -- well.

Toward somewhere else. Kanan hasn't had the energy to ask. But he also doesn't want to take a break, because that would give him time to think, and to dream.

Which is why he's currently in the galley, brewing up a large stash of caf to keep himself up for the next four to eight hours.

He's fine! Really!

With the ship safely away, Hera also doesn't need to be in the pilot's chair. Which gives her a chance to get away from Chopper's, who's still complaining about the job, and to stop in her room long enough to change. Once she's undone the bands around her lekku and swapped the jacket for her normal clothes, the next priority is sending out the scans she'd made. Some good was going to come from all of this, even if they didn't make it out with the tech.

So she has her scanner in hand when she steps into the galley, though she takes an instinctive step back when she sees Kanan. She wasn't expecting him here, she'd been planning to knock on his door once she was done transmitting, but -

"That's a lot of caf."

Hera watches him for a second, then silently slips the scanner back into her pocket.

"I'd rather you didn't drink all that by yourself," she says, stepping farther into the galley.

Hera steps out of his way, but then reaches out, taking his arm as he passes.

"Let's just sit down, okay?"

She takes a breath, and leads him to sit down at the table.

And then she retrieves the mugs and the caf herself. She doesn't really want him drinking that much of it, not if this is how he's feeling. But she also knows that's not really her call to make. So she pours out two mugs and sets the rest aside for the moment, before sitting down across from him.

Hera doesn't drink her own, but does look down to it, pressing her fingers against the warm mug.

"Kanan, I -"

She exhales, and makes herself look up. "I'm sorry, I had no idea."

"It's sick."

Hera sighs, shaking her head. "I don't know, I wish we could've ..."

What could they have done? She's not sure. Destroyed the Hutt's collection? Stolen it away?

She has no answer for that, and instead of trying, she says what she knows she needs to hear.

"We can't go back there."

Maybe it's not what Kanan wants to hear.

But it's what Hera believes, down to her core.

Softly, "It still means something."

Hera doesn't flinch. She listens, patient, not looking away from him this time.

And then she suggests, still quiet, "To anyone who still cares when they see injustice."

"I'm not -"

She takes one hand off her mug, moving it flat onto the table, though she stops herself from reaching toward him.

"I just want you to know, it won't end with this."

Now, Hera does look down, to her hand still flat on the table.

"I can't know what this is like," she says, slowly. "And nothing can fix it. But - you're still here."

She takes another deep breath, giving herself a moment to hesitate, to decide whether to say it.

"So it's not just history."

After a few seconds, Hera nods. "I think I can see - why it would have been easier, that way."

She can still be who she is. Maybe not all of it, all the time. But enough that mattered, all the time. Kanan doesn't have that.

"And if it's easier for you now - I understand."

She looks up again. "But I'm going to remember this."

Hera hesitates another moment, but now does reach out, tapping Kanan's hand. She also smiles, though it flickers out just as quick.

"I will," she repeats. And then she finally reaches back, and sips her own caf.

"And - now we know. We can put the word out."

As much as it may matter, but.

"Maybe," she agrees.

"I wish it was something we could do ourselves, but..."

But, if she's being honest, she's never taking Kanan anywhere near that place again. She doesn't want to imagine what a Hutt like that would do with an actual living Jedi.

She nods, her eyes dropping down to the table again.

"But we got something out of it." Hera reaches back, down to her pocket, and pulls out the holoscanner. She sets it down on the table, and taps one side, white light gathering over it, into the shape of the refining tech they'd now destroyed.

"I did."

She looks over the holo, but with no more certainty than she had before. Her knowledge of mineral refinery is limited, let alone when it comes to kyber.

"But I hope this makes more sense to someone else out there than it does to me."

"But someone that specilalizes in kyber?"

Hera shakes her head. "I don't know how many there were, but if the Empire's this interested, they must have hunted down as many as they could."

[personal profile] for_everyone 2018-02-12 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably," she says, though she reaches to switch the holo off again.

"Someone out there must know something about this. It's all about finding them."

She lets out a breath. "And the Empire's been good at making that difficult."

Hera watches the now-dark holo projector, flattening her hands on the table again.

"Right now, we did what we could."

It's a big galaxy. And sometimes it does come down to what you can manage.

Hera stays silent at first, her eyes still on the table.

Then, "That's the idea."

She doesn't look up. "Sometimes it feels like patience is literally killing us."

"I know."

And she does. She does know that. Finally, she raises her eyes to him again.

"Kanan, is there anything - besides drinking too much caf..."

"I can do sitting and talking," she says, now also smiling, if faintly.

"At least for a little while."
