There's tension on the Ghost. Kanan isn't sure if Hera's contributing to it at all, or if it's just him and his awareness of how colossally he messed up. Letting Zeb bet Chopper was bad enough, but Calrissian sold Hera as the end consequence of Kanan's bad deal-making and it just --
He's not even sure it's something that can be fixed. (Should it be fixed? It is a truly epic fuckup.)
But since avoiding Hera's only going to make it worse, he makes his way to the cockpit once they've landed again, and he won't distract her from piloting.
"So, uh -- "

It’s something to hope for, but it’s not a certainty.
“That’s what I think, anyway. It’s part of why I’m here.”
no subject
"All right," she murmurs. "This - this is helping."
no subject
“That’s . . . good.”
no subject
"Most people - if they don't think the Hutts and the Zygerrians had the right idea - pity us. Feel sorry for us."
Poor Twi'leks and their savage planet. "No one takes responsibility for it."
no subject
She’s amazing! Uh. Twi’leks are amazing!
“Not just because Master Secura would find a way to come back from the dead and kick my ass, either.”
But a little bit that, probably. Hero-worship never really dies.

Still, she says, "Don't put me in that position again, Kanan."
no subject
Kanan doesn’t look away from her at all, because it’s a promise, and because he intends to keep it, come Imperial hell and high water.
“Never.”
no subject
She looks back to him, keeping her eyes on him now. "I wasn't the only member of this crew sold today."
no subject
“Right away, Hera. I was way out of line.”
no subject
More quietly, "It's not just an old fear, Kanan. It's my worst fear. Do you understand that?"
no subject
And when he reopens them —
“I won’t make that mistake again — or any one like it.”
no subject
But they've also come this far. Maybe it's better to make things as plain as possible.
"It's like the Empire." She still watches him as she speaks. "I may die under a slaver's hand. But I won't live under it."
no subject
“I wouldn’t expect you to.”
no subject
She does look away now, shifting forward, to lean on the pilot's chair, as though finally setting down a weight she'd been carrying.
no subject
He’ll burn himself out entirely, first. Though hopefully it will never come down to that.
no subject
Hera takes a deep breath, and pushes herself back up, straightening from the chair and taking a step toward him.
"We're all going to make mistakes. And sometimes one with - unthinkable consequences."
She hesitates a moment, but then reaches out, and puts her hand on his shoulder. "Just don't make this one again."
no subject
"I swear."
no subject
"Then I'll go with you when you talk to Chopper."
Because that way is a lot less likely to end with Chopper's shock prod coming out.
no subject
"Would you? Thanks."
Even if Kanan feels like he probably deserves a judicious prod or two, that doesn't mean he's looking forward to it.
no subject
Which Hera isn't particularly looking forward to, mostly because a conversation between Zeb and Chopper now seems likely to result in a mess in her cargo bay. But better to do it before they get any actual supplies down there.
no subject
"We should. Want me to get him, and then we can circle up with Chopper?"
He pauses.
"Or I could go and get Chopper, and you could find Zeb . . . "
no subject
Again, they're more likely to avoid any shock prods that way.
no subject
" . . . cargo bay?"
Since they have yet to really refill it, it's probably the safest place.
no subject
"I'll see you there."

He doesn't toss off a salute as he leaves, largely because he's very serious about her title. He always has been, but especially now. He doesn't plan on forgetting who really runs this endeavor again.
